Weather Betting Scam Investigation in Paris: $34,000 Fraud

A bizarre incident occurred near Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, where a weather prediction/betting platform offered bets on the daily maximum temperature in Paris. A user made a high-risk investment, predicting a temperature higher than expected, based on the knowledge that the platform used measurements from a single sensor located near the airport, provided by Météo-France.

The user, aware of the sensor’s location, went to the area before the prediction time expired and briefly raised the temperature around the sensor using a portable heat source (such as a hair dryer), causing the temperature to be recorded as the day’s maximum. The betting market was settled based on this manipulated data, leading the user to make approximately $34,000.

After an investigation by Météo-France, the incident was deemed manipulation, and French police have launched an inquiry into the matter.
